Natural Sleep Aides
Beyond The Bedding Start your night out right by having the right bedding to make yourself as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Twin , Full , Queen , or King Egyptian Cotton Sheets are very soft and feel great against the skin. Top your bed with a hypoallergenic Twin , Full/Queen , or King Down Comforter . This will keep you comfortable without a lot of weight throughout the year and minimize allergens in your sleep area. Finally, lay your head on the supple softness of a Down Pillow to help lull you to sleep. If all of this is right and you still can’t sleep, the following information may be helpful. We all have occasional nights when it is hard to fall asleep, some of us more than others. Those nights may be helped by a number of natural sedatives that are available over-the-counter, and please notice that I didn’t say drugs or pharmaceuticals. There are many natural products that relax us or stimulate serotonan production and produce excellent results without the problems or side effects associated with prescriptions and over-the-counter sedatives. Serotonin is an important initiator of sleep that is produced in our body from the amino acid tryptophan. Taking tryptophan increases serotonin levels and helps induce sleep, however the FDA banned L-Tryptophan, except by prescription, back in the 1990’s, so it is no longer available in an over-the-counter capsule form. The following is a list of natural products that may help you on nights that you are having trouble falling asleep. I must add at this point, before taking any supplements, you should consult your physician, especially if you are taking any prescribed medications. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) This is actually one step closer to serotonin than L-Tryptophan and is available in many drug stores and health food stores in their supplement section. Melatonin Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland, located in the center of the brain. However, its sleep promoting effects are most apparent only if a person’s melatonin levels are low. Melatonin is available in many drug stores and health food stores in their supplement section. Valerian Root This plant has been widely used in folk medicine. For many, it demonstrates improved sleep quality with no sleepiness the following day. This herb is available in many drug stores and health food stores in their supplement section. Passionflower Was widely used by the Aztec Indians. One of its constituents is harmine, known to induce a contemplative state. Chamomile Tea Known to ease tense muscles, relieve irritability and help sleep, especially in children. Chamomile is available in many grocery stores and health food stores. Rooibos Tea Helps induce sleep directly by preventing excessive firing of neurons that causes wakefulness. In Africa it is given to infants that are prone to colic. It can also help people with restless leg syndrome get a better night sleep. This one may be a little harder to find, some health food stores or on-line herbal suppliers may be a better source.
Again I want to stress that before starting any new supplements that you consult your physician. The FDA requires the following disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. The above mentioned herbs and supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
